BIO :
There is a new artiste in town and, by the sounds of things, one of Jamaica’s best reggae/dancehall icons, Sizzla, has a lot to do with his inspiration.
House of Hits artiste Marley Campbell, singjay and revolutionary lyrics spitting Bobo Rastafarian, is no perversion of that high priced voice he deejays in that has everyone thinking, “is that Sizzla”.
With burning social commentary and good lyrical content when courting the women in his songs, Marley’s mission now is to come into his own. “I am an artiste who come to change up certain folly in the music. I heal musically,” Marley described his music.
Marley Campbell was born to parents Avis Campbell and John Campbell on July 13, 1983 in Linstead, St. Catherine. He grew up in a district known as Golden Grove.
He attended Ms. Betty’s Basic School, Linstead Primary School, Ewarton Primary and Ewarton Comprehensive High school.
At Ewarton Comprehensive, he received top honor in Art & Craft.
Marley started out as a higgler, selling male and female clothing. He did this for quite a while then decided that music was his future. He took up an invitation from his cousin who owns a studio and moved to Ocho Rios.
With things moving at a slow pace, Marley decided to take up an offer to voice some dub-plates in Spanish Town. It was this move that opened doors for Campbell. His friend Devon Morrison (Blue Steel) told him of a place where he could voice some 45s.
Devon introduced him to Elvis ‘Flego’ Grant, the Production Manager for House of Hits Records Limited, and from there is was a match made in heaven.
Marley Campbell first recorded ‘Mash Up The Place’ produced by his label camp House of Hits.
“This song is about the youths weh waan rise up and get a chance to make their name,” he explained.
Listening to ‘Mash Up The Place’ and his latest ‘Giving You My Love’, both getting good airplay, it’s hard to tell that this is a new artiste named Marley Campbell.
Despite this uncanny sound-alike, Marley explains that though he is inspired by Sizzla, this is his natural voice. “I am naturally a singer with an energetic delivery. Most people mistake me for Sizzla but this is my natural voice. With words, sound and power. Normally my songs are smoother with words projected to make people hear me more clearly. This is a meditation to teach the youths, educate and help build the nation,” he said.
His face is not one you could mistake for Sizzla’s, however, and assisting in this is a music video out for ‘Mash Up The Place’, currently playing on Hype TV and MDTV and a video is in the making for ‘Giving You My Love’, as the song continues to get good rotation on Irie FM, Hitz 92FM and Bess FM.
‘Giving You My Love’, which is about a young Rastafarian courting a young princess despite the discouragement which comes against discrimination against Rasta, was recorded on House of Hits latest rhythm, the Sweetness. Sweetness also transports hits from Lutan Fyah, Luciano and Mikey General, to name a few.
Marley Campbell had everyone surprised at the recent staging of Fantan Mojah’s Reggae In The Valley when he took St. Elizabeth by surprise.
“Right now mi deh yah fi tek corruption out of di youths. We nuh inna it fi money,” Marley stated.
In the meantime, look out for Marley Campbell on his campaign to make his voice and face be known in the music industry.
