Als hij daar was bijgeweest hadden we nen helen andere set te zien gekregen en vooral is goe kunnen lachen (in de positieve zin van het woord). LITTLE REVIEW: Run down... hmmm. This isn't my strongest area because of my fading memory but here is a quickie. One thing to start - yes the place was RAM PACKED right up until the very end of the celebrity/veteran clashes. In fact it got very very difficult to negotiate through the crowd particularly at the very end. I stink at these run downs. I'm good with the photos but bad with the blow by blow tune by tune thing so I won't even attempt that and just go with straight anecdotes. For you ladies and gentlemen, I will try. Super Strong, as always, was phenomenal in the early warm. They are the early sound by which all other early warm sounds (which I don't mean in a bad or derogatory way) should be judged. They had airhorns blowing before the clash even kicked off. One airhorn user blasted his about 3 feet away from me and it was so loud that I literally felt my brain rattle. It may have been one of the loudest sounds to which my ears have ever been subject. I had to stop and collect myself after that. I thought I was going to pass out. Ok - World Clash Proper... Rebel Tone was a no show. Don't mean to interject much side commentary here but my brother and I are pretty die-hard Black Reaction fans and would have liked to see them sent in as Rebel Tone's proxy. The announcement that they were noshows garnered about 6 boos but otherwise was totally expected. Clash went by fast. Let's see - some key points.... The New York crowd was much more receptive to Sentinel this year than last year - they did well and had to go first. Black Cat did well, until garnering a lot of boos during their 2nd and 3rd rounds. I didn't like the 5 min round to kick things off - that needs to be 15min, especially if we're dealing with 4 sounds. Mighty Crown did very well with their Mavados and other new tunes. Typical strong stage presence from them. Bass Odyssey was great but needed more time to get to that fever pitch point that they tend to get to twice and even three times per clash and they really only reached that once - which is ok but people wanted more. Also, Keith was there but no Squingy at the show, backstage or otherwise. I hope he is ok. Mark was also not there. Mighty Crown won - they had the energy and never let up. I felt that they earned the trophy. Ninjaman vs Rodigan. I tried to approach Ninja for an interview and he wasn't having it. At all. He seemed to be in a business mode and not too chatty. Thats ok, my feelings weren't hurt Very VERY strong performance from him both during the dubs session and when he deejayed toward the end. He's still got it, no question about it. Rodigan coming out in the Elvis suit had me laughing so hard I thought I was going to vomit. Rodigan pulled out many of his classics and did extremely well. Rodigan had the edge, and the gimmick, and walked with the trophy on that one. Matterhorn vs Beenie Man. This was more of a friendly clash than anything else. Beenie took the approach of acting uninterested in everything - just about yawning until he took over. I saw a very cool combination of dubs and deejaying from both of them toward the end. Beenie using Matterhorn tunes against him and Matterhorn using Bennie tunes - as well as some Bounty Killer for some extra punch. I am glad it took that direction rather than having some strict rule about no deejaying allowed. I really enjoyed seeing Ninja & Beenie in this format. In fact I wish there was more of this kind of thing planned in the future. Could THAT be the future of Irish and Chin events? I'd be down. Overall - I felt that the show was a trailerload of entertainment for patron's dollars. I never walk out of there feeling like it wasn't worth the drive or hassle or anything. If I had one specific criticism it would be that the format seemed too short and rushed the clash itself to make room for the other clashes. Dub fi dub came too quickly and I didn't feel like the sounds had ample time to go through their anthems in as complete a way as I remember from the past World Clashes I've been to (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007). I wanted a longer round somewhere in there and it wasn't to be found. And to be honest dub fi dub tends to bore me a little bit (sorry!). Dub fi dub went really long this time, and while exciting at moments, I really do prefer the earlier high-energy rounds more. SOME PICS:
