Franky Paul w.i.c.k.e.d, Uroy laat ons nog eens zien waar de hele deejay cultuur vandaan komt, Gregory sweet as can be.

goei concertje, goei vibes, gezellige plek

deel 1
HEINEKEN STARTIME TOUR DISASTER.
What was a good idea has turned into a debacle as the European Heineken Startime Tour - feat. Gregory Isaacs, U Roy, Frankie Paul and Lloyd Parks & We The People Band - was abruptly cut short in the UK. In Paris, the artists were put up in a crappy hotel by the local promoter. Furthermore they did not know how much money they were going to be paid when they left Jamaica, had to travel in a tour bus designed for 10 at the max when they were 14, etc... They were then left with no hotel in London! The debacle of Heineken Startime Tour had NOTHING to do with drugs (Gregory Isaacs?!), but just mismanagement and total lack of respect for artists by promoters and tour production company. Tour producer Eddie Brown left U Roy and sound engineer Bravo stranded in a shitplace and asked Gregory Isaacs to fly to Italy to do a show. For everyone's information, the show in Italy was supposed to be WITH U Roy and Frankie Paul. When he realized that U Roy had been purposefully left out (so Eddie Brown, who had already gotten an advance from the Italian promoter, would pay Gregory only and pocket the difference that was supposed to be paid to U Roy), Gregory Isaacs refused to board the plane and left. Bravo has not been paid, and his return flight to Jamaica is on Monday 25th July, so he's left in London with no hotel, no food money. Eddie Brown owes money to U Roy, who had to pay 700 Pounds for his return flight to Kingston, and refuses to pick up his phone.

Antwoord:
Sirs, I've just received a copy of an article on the recent Startime European tour. I am forced to respond, as the article totally distorts and misrepresents the facts. Firstly, it was not a Heineken Startime tour as Heineken had nothing to do with it. It was a tour done solely under the auspices of MKB, the Jamaican promoters who established this now famous Startime series of shows 17 years ago. All arrangements were made by Eddie Brown of Pride Music (London) who did a tremendous amount of work to put this first tour together and worked his butt off to keeping things going throughout the tour. It is most unfair that he is now being unfairly and maliciously villified by artistes whose conduct was directly responsible for the problems which ruptured the final week of the tour. It is not true that artistes left Jamaica not knowing what their remuneration would be? This is in fact, quite laughable. Can you imagine a Jamaican artiste going off on tour, not knowing what he is going to be paid?. Come on, let's get real. Salaries were agreed and advances paid before we left Jamaica, despite the fact that some European promoters were understandably reluctant to shell out advances due to the "no show" reputation of one of our main acts.Happily we were able to deliver as we said we would. There were indeed problems eg an uncomfortable tour bus in the early stages. But this were known beforehand, because of a late booking which stemmed from the uncertainty surrounding the tour in the late stages. Everyone knew that the bus would be changed at the first available opportunity and this was done, so the talk about mismanagement is nonsensical. Talk about "shitty" hotels is another big lie. One of the so-called "shitty" hotels was the same hotel in which the American track and field team to the London Grand Prix stayed. Tours always present challenges and we had ours and will learn from them. Despite the disruptive vibes, the distortions, exaggerations and untruths , it was a great experience and we will know exactly what to do and what not do do next time round. We will also, of necessity, be very careful in our selection of artistes. Promoters are always easy pickings and there is always a lot of talk about disrespect of artistes. What about the rampant disrespect artistes show to promoters who take all the risks?. What about dishonest artistes who collect monies and fail to show, thus putting the promoter's reputation on the firing line and exposing us to serious financial difficulties. Promoters might need artistes, but artistes also cannot survive without promoters,so what is needed is less ego-tripping, a greater sense of responsibility and more understanding that we are in this together and need to work together for our mutual benefit This was my first European Tour and I was quite frankly, bowled over by the enthusiasm for reggae music. We wish to apologize to the promoters in Italy and Holland who were so badly affected by the last-week cancellations and can assure them that we will take steps to ensure that this never happens again. I also want to personally thank Eddie Brown for his great work in making the tour possible and the promoters in Germany, Italy, France, England, Sweden and Belgium for their graciousness and understanding.. Yours in music
Keith ****, Director, MKB Promotions (Promoters/producers of Startime, Jamaica's No.1 vintage showcase).
