JAH SHAKA
Jah Shaka moves like a monument, his traits look like graved into a rock, his presence ispires respect. It's not only suggestion, it's not only myth: the man leads great experience and history , a storm of bass and dubs which covers three intense decades.
Seventies. London hosts the birth of Jah Shaka sound system in the new galaxy of english reggae. These are the years of "blood and fire" reggae, inspired by the wordly fight for liberation, the years "when the reggae was king", when reggae was always preceeded by the word "roots". With Fatman, Sir Coxone and many others, sound systems were the most vehicle of diffusion for this reggae, whose audience was black at 95%, besides of a strong competition in which Jah Shaka was often at the top ranking. At the end of decade, his productions begin to come out, with LP series "Commandaments of dub".
Eighties. "Roots" becomes less usual than "dancehall"; when "ragga" arrives, Jah Shaka says "This word has no place in my vocabulary" and keeps going straight on his way. So his specificities become more evident, in a King david style: one man one sound, no singers or DJs, public at his shoulders, H.I.M. in front of him, long and repeated dubs, no mixer, just one turntable... all ingredients of a ritual which makes dance similar to a liturgy. His production fill up a market gap, he produces by himself what he needs, just as earlier jamaican producers who created ska. Sessions' intensity and sound's power comes to legend, being followed by his public who grows and grows until becoming a real new scene.
Nineties. Shaka isn't alone anymore, but can consider himself as "the" inspirer and "the" father of a new roots reggae in the U.K., what will lay a path for a new roots reggae in Jamaica too. Brothers Russ and Lol Bell-Brown, encouraged and produced by Jah Shaka with the name of "Disciples", are among the most known artists, singers, producers, labels and... sound systems. Abashanti, for example, begins with a style just the same than Shaka vibe. A really multi-racial public, and a U.K.-born digital roots music, are what makes these sounds a scene totally divided from Jamaican "dancehall" reggae's one.
Early 2000's. Jah Shaka continues playing like in Seventies: only one turntable, always the same, supposed to have been bought in the Sixties, just as the loudspeakers are the same whiche were been unloaded at "Phoebes", thousand clashes' veterans. Now Shaka doesn't clash or meet anybody, he is an internationa celebrity of institutional level, time independent, without the containt of the dusty "arena" where the ones try to float over the others, in the always rude sound business. In the meantime his son moves on, many say that he will continue to accomplish to his father's mission. And he'll buy new amplifiers...
Pier Tosi met the myth in Bologna, in one of the many circumstances which have been enriched by his art. In his words, some details of the story of a man who, with his choice to detach and isolate himself, really let conscious reggae, spiritual reggae, roots reggae spread widely over its borderlines

The sound system phenomon began in Jamaica in the 'fifties' as a new style of entertainment, sound systems were then, and still are today, quite literally mobile discotheques. As the competition among systems in the early days increased, so the popularity grew, meaning systems endeavoured to become bigger and technically better to stay ahead of their rivals. This lead in its turn led to a rapid development of home-grown ska and rock steady which eventually manifested in full-blown reggae. Throughout reggae history sound systems have served to establish important producers, sound engineers and many vocal artists alike.
Today however, the word sound system has become synonimous with other sub-cultures far akin from reggae. It stands out tall and proud on posters all over Europe, tagged onto the end of different dj names, a strange thought to those who still maintain the true time honoured tradition of sound system. Those who have pride and invest all their time, energy and financial resources in getting the show on the road, at all costs.

"Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His name in the dance...sing unto God, sing praises to His name; exolt HIM that rideth on the heavens by His name JAH, and rejoice before HIM...sing unto HIM a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise..." Selah!
