Round 4 (10 Minutes)
In this round, Blunt kept on getting their crowd support and did their thing, once again. Another very good round which featured some dubs on the Fresh riddim. The biggest forward of the round, and one of the biggest of the night came when Blunt played a custom built Yellowman dissing Mighty Crown. The lyrics of the tune itself did not even come in before the place went wild and Ajax pulled it up. The intro alone done Mighty Crown, it pretty much signaled their burial.
Round 4 (10 Minutes)
Sammy T took the mic and told Ajax to leave Chin alone, because he is not clashing him. Mighty Crown then played some dubs that we are used to hearing, but not from them. They played Luciano's "Gone Bad a Morning" that I usually hear from Poison Dart (FL). They also got some scattered small forwards for Freddy McGreggor dubs and Culture. They kept on talking about the fact that nobody knows Blunt and that they travel every week, etc. They played Wayne Wonder, Bounty Killer combo which said "Nobody is calling your name" and got their best forward of the round, which was still small. Not a very good round. In my eyes, it was 4-0 Blunt, CLEAN SWEEP and no need for a dub fi dub.
Dub fi Dub (11 Dubs Each)
Alright, here is what happened. A couple times during the night, Ajax said Mighty Crown was not Japanese and they were Chinese. When Ajax was playing his first tune in the dub fi dub, which sounded like it was going to be Ras Shiloh's "Are You Satisfied," Sammy T, for some reason, stopped the dub. In Ajax's intro, he made a reference to Sammy T and something to do with "Chinese." I do not know if this was related to him pulling up Ajax's tune, but he did, and Ajax and he were very upset. They ALMOST came to blows, but security and a bunch of other people came up on stage and sorted everything out. It took maybe 15 minutes or so to sort everything out. Blunt refused to play the dub fi dub because they felt disrespected by Mighty Crown. They did, however, eventually agree to play the dub fi dub .....
First tune, Blunt Played Max Romeo's "I Chase The Devil," Crown played Jr. Mervin "Cool Out Son." Crown got the bigger forward.
Second tune, blunt played Bob Andy, Marcia Griffiths combo "I knew we'd meet for a clash ..." crown played courtney melody "Ninja Me Ninja." Blunt got the bigger forward.
Third tune, Blunt played Abysinnians, they got the bigger forward, don't know what Mighty Crown played (Blunt leads 2-1)
Fourth tune, blunt played fred locks, crown played jimmy cliff. They both got boos, so I call it a tie.
Fifth tune, blunt played dobby dobson, crown played dennis brown, crown got the bigger forward (tied 2-2)
Sixth tune, Blunt played George Nooks "Blunt Posse is the General" and Crown counteracted it with "Soundboy tonight is your funeral." (Crown leads 3-2)
Seventh tune, Blunt played URoy "Long time we a call you," Crown played Gregory Isaacs "Number 1 Sound." Crown got the bigger forward (Crown leads 4-2)
Eigth tune, Blunt played Horace Andy "skylarking," crown played scion success "done dead already." Crown got the bigger forward (Crown leads 5-2).
Ajax came on the mic and said that the Scion was a 45 and that he wants Mighty Crown to play it for the people to prove to them that it is a dub. He was very adamant that the tune was a 45 and that it did not say Mighty Crown during the song itself. Ajax claimed the song was a 45. Crown seemed very reluctant to play the song again, which made a lot of people suspect it really was a 45. After the clash, Sammy T told me he wanted to finish the dub fi dub, then, afterwards, play the dub and prove to everyone that it really is a dub. Crown finally agreed to play the dub for everyone to hear, but they wanted Ajax to agree to the stipulation that if the dub said "Mighty Crown" during the song, that Blunt would lock off. Ajax did not agree. Crown played the dub, and it played for about a minute or so. EVERYONE in the dance was listening very carefully, and eventually Scion said "Mighty Crown" during the dub itself. As soon as that happened, the place ERUPTED and everyone was digging off Simon and Sammy's fists, seemingly very happy for them.
Simon then said that Blunt is supposed to lock off, while Ajax changed his accusation from the tune being a 45 to it being a splice, which I think are two different things. Anyway, after this, Mighty Crown packed up their dubs and went outside of the club, while Blunt was inside complaining and carrying on, basically being mad at the promoter for not declaring them the winners, since Crown took off.
After the clash, it was said that Tony Screw (the owner of Downbeat) said that the Scion Success dub was a splice. He had nothing to do with the clash, but obviously, as a respected elder in the business, his opinion means a lot. It should also mean a lot that he is good friends with Blunt, though. Anyway, Mighty Crown went outside of the venue, seemingly waiting for a ride for maybe 15 minutes or more, and me and my crew left.
Yet another dance in NYC in which a winner is not declared. One thing is for sure, though, maybe Ajax did take away what should have been a victory for Blunt, but Blunt earned my ratings tonight. I definitely agree with my brethren skallawa, in that the new selector, Diamond, might be a missing piece for the sound. Blunt really impressed me tonight.
I do think that biasness in dances these days is getting a bit out of hand, though. I mean, it was so obvious all night that Blunt had their fans who would not support Crown, and that Crown had their fans that would not support Blunt. However, Blunt's performance and selection was far superior to Mighty Crown's, and they deserved the win. In my eyes, Blunt won the clash. I would liken the outcome of this clash to a boxer beating an opponent for 11 rounds, but letting the opponent land one punch, and that punch causing the fight to end in a draw. That is pretty much what I saw.
Bigup CTHUG, skallawa, skye, skerrit, and the other boardies that were in attendance. Once I go to sleep and wake up, I will publish my pictures on my website,
www.soundplexmovements.com, hopefully, CTHUG won't ban me for that plug (mek me eat a food, brethren).
Bigup to Crown and Blunt.
Bless
(Mighty Moke)
